If you live in the north east, then you know about shoveling snow. It happens every winter, the snow falls, the shovels come out, and people end up in the hospital or their doctor's office with a bad back. Luckily, there are some tips you can follow to reduce the risk of injury while gaining the benefits of some really great exercise.

  • Warm up your body: Take the time to properly stretch before you go outside. This will get your muscles ready to work.

  • Don't use your back: Instead, use your arms and legs. The back is designed to support your upper body while your arms and legs are designed to do work.

  • Dress for the weather: Take into account the temperature, wind, precipitation, and how long you'll be outside. You want your body to stay warm, but you also want to avoid restricting your motion as much as possible.

  • Take your time: You want to be careful to not overdo it. Work at a comfortable pace, and be sure to take a break when needed. Know your limits.

  • Don't wait until the end: Depending on the severity of the storm, and the size of your driveway, considering shoveling more than once. It's much easier to clear a few inches a couple of times than it is to clear one foot once.

  • Watch for hazards: Be careful to watch for ice, and make sure you stay aware of your surroundings. During a heavy snow storm, trees can fall, cars can run off the road, and your visibility can be compromised.

  • Stop if your hurt: Shoveling can be rigorous work, and even after taking every precaution, injuries can happen. If you get hurt, stop and seek appropriate care. Continuing to work after an initial injury can cause a host of other problems.
